SAS, Scandinavian Airlines, made headlines all over Europe last week as it make the surprise announcement that it is preparing to leave Star Alliance to join SkyTeam. This week’s news regarding the Scandinavian carrier isn’t quite as eye catchy, but still is quite important. The carrier has in fact released its passenger figures for September 2023. Here’s the take on the latest SAS passenger numbers.
SAS Carries Over 2.3 Million Passengers in September 2023
Today’s news about Scandinavian Airlines regards the passenger numbers the airline has carried in the past month of September and how they compare to last year.
The overall figure shows that SAS has carried only in the month of September 2023 over 2.3 million passengers. The consolidated number of 2,324,000 passengers translates to a 17.4% increase in passenger levels when comparing it to the same month of 2022.
The airline achieved this by deploying more capacity, more flights and frequency, across its network maintaining though an almost constant load factor. Scandinavian Airlines planes flew on average at 78.2% of capacity in September 2023.
Positive News For Scandinavian Airlines
This is positive news and of great importance for the carrier in this particular historical moment for SAS. The carrier has been in a bit of a hard spot financially since 2020, even having to file for Chapter 11 protection in the US. The fact that passenger volumes and revenue are on the rise offers a positive outlook for the immediate future.
We’ll get a more clear insight whether this uplift in traffic will be continuous or just momentary once we move into the less busy winter season. I’ll be on the lookout for the next figures in the coming months to figure just that out.
