Azerbaijan Airlines, the country’s flag carrier, is undergoing a significant fleet renovations and to speed things up the carrier placed a new firm order for Airbus A320 family plance. Let’s find out more in detail what the new Azerbaijan Airlines order is all about and what the plans for these new planes are.
What Planes did Azerbaijan Airlines Order from Airbus?
The new order the airline has placed with Airbus will see 12 new planes join the Azerbaijan Airlines fleet. Specifically these new planes will be part of the A320 family. Therefore the order is for both:
- A320neo
- A321neo
However at the moment it is unknown how many of each variant specifically the carrier ordered. As we’ll see later on in this post Azerbaijan Airlines already operator already flies the ceo versions of the A320.
The new jets will therefore serve to replace the older ageing and less fuel efficient ceo variants in the fleet at this time. Also unknown is the engine choice for these new A320 and A321neo jets, that will also be announced at a later stage.
The Configuration of The New A320 and A321
It’s likely that these new jets that will join the Azerbaijan Airlines fleet will have a 2 class configuration. Exactly how many seats will be housed in the two planes is unsure, however it is highly likely that they will have both Business and Economy class cabins.
What Airbus Planes Does the Airline Already Fly?
The Azeri airline already operates Airbus produced planes. They compose all of the airline’s short haul fleet. However the carrier also operates 2 Airbus planes that are becoming more uncommon these days in their long range fleet.
At the moment the Azerbaijan Airlines fleet features:
- 4 A319-100
- 3 A320neo
- 6 A320-200
- 2 Boeing 767-300
- 1 Boeing 777-200
- 2 Boeing 787-8
- 1 Embraer E-190
- 1 A340-500
- 1 A340-600
These last two planes of the list are becoming extremely rare to be seen in airports around the world as airlines are quickly retiring quadjets.
